HEV Sales Projected At 1 Million Annually By 2012
sales of vehicles with fuel-saving hybrid electric systems will exceed 1 million units annually by 2012 in the world's largest auto market, according to a study prepared for the Center for Automotive Research at Altarum in Ann Arbor, Mich. Hybrids will make up at least 7.5 percent of light-vehicle sales in a decade, the report said. Toyota and Honda, the only companies now offering hybrids, expect to sell fewer than 35,000 such vehicles this year, or 0.2 percent, of the 16.8 million-unit sales forecast for 2002.
