GM Reported To Be Downgrading Fuel-Cell Development Plans

Firm appears to be favoring hybrid development instead.

NEW YORK (AFX) - General Motors Corp has downgraded development plans for fuel-cell technology but now aims to to sell 1 million vehicles powered by gas/electric hybrid engines by mid-decade, USA Today reported without naming sources.

GM had been focusing on hydrogen power for alternative fuel vehicles, but technological stumbling blocks and competitive pressures have forced it to rethink its plans.

GM is instead expected to announce that it will offer hybrid versions of its Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups, Saturn Vue and Chevrolet Equinox small SUVs, and Chevrolet Malibu sedan by 2005, the newspaper said.
