Skoda to Launch Electric Car in 2014

VW subsidiary in Czech Republic has been experimenting with electric vehicles based on Octavaia combi.

Czech carmaker Skoda Auto, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Germany’s Volkswagen AG plans to launch production of fully-electric cars in 2014, the company announced on Thursday.

“Skoda is working on the serial production of electric cars. We will bring the car on the road in 2014,” CEO Winfried Vahland said in a statement. The company didn’t release however any additional details about production. According to Czech newspaper Hospodarske Noviny, the first such car is likely to be based on Skoda’s Citigo model.

Skoda Auto is currently forming a department that will focus exclusively on electric car development has recruited 22 specialized engineers to develop a production model. In late 2011, the Czech carmaker launched road tests of 10 fully-electric powered prototype versions of the Octavia combi.
The car has a range of 150 kilometers on a single charge and develops a top speed of 135 kilometers per hour. The Octavia is built on the same platform as the Volkswagen Golf.
