Bentley is gearing up to build a plug-in hybrid engine by 2015 in the quest for improved fuel efficiency.

Speaking to Drive at the 2012 Detroit motor show, Bentley boss Wolfgang Durheimer confirmed the German-owned British brand would produce a petrol-electric hybrid drivetrain designed to significantly reduce fuel use while maintaining the effortless performance the brand is known for.

It’s not known what engine would be used, although a V6 would make sense given the Volkswagen Group – of which Bentley is part of – has already established a market for a hybrid one, using it in other brands such as Volkswagen and Porsche.
