GM's Akerson Wants Electric Car Option Across Brands
General Motors is preparing to launch at least two new electrified vehicles, on its way to selling one under every U.S. brand, CEO Dan Akerson said today.
GM plans to launch a multi-purpose vehicle – essentially a small minivan – likely in 2012 and 2013, using the Chevrolet Volt’s extended-range electric powertrain, Akerson told reporters on the sidelines of Automotive News World Congress, a Detroit conference run by the trade journal Automotive News. The automaker also will likely launch a plug-in hybrid version of the Cadillac SRX crossover, he said.
He also said GM plans to launch a second extended-range electric hatchback. GM plans to export the Volt late this year to Europe as the Opel Ampera, with changes to front-end styling. It wasn’t clear whether Akerson was referring to the Ampera or an entirely new hatchback.
