While 2011 will see excitement build around early adopters of electric cars, the larger market will be harder to convince.

The amount of media attention that has been lavished on Chevrolet's Volt and the Nissan Leaf might lead consumers to think that 2011 will be the year in which electric cars finally become commonplace.

Not quite, says Craig Giffi.
