Mike Harris hopes Marco residents get used to the idea of buzzing around the island in electric GEM vehicles like they do in some Florida golf communities.

The Villages near Ocala, Ocean Reef in Key Largo, and Key West are just a few places where GEMs are popular, said Harris, owner and operator of GEM of Marco Island.

His dealership has a wide variety of GEM electric vehicles from which to choose.

Established in 1998, 45,000 GEM cars have been sold globally.

Neighborhood electric vehicle manufacturer sold $30 million worth of units in 2010.
