Hawaii Electric to Offer Discount Power Rates to Electric Car Owners

3-Year program will be available to 1,000 customers on Oahu, and 300 each in Maui and on the Big Island.

Customers of Hawaiian Electric Co. can now take advantage of lower electricity rates for charging electric vehicles.

The pilot project, designed to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles and incentivize customers to charge vehicles at night, during off-peak hours, gained approval this week from the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission.

The three-year program will be available to 1,000 customers on Oahu, 300 in Maui County and 300 on the Big Island.
