Power Blackout Narrowly Averted in San Diego

Power cuts left one-in-five customers without power for 45 minutes.

• Shortly after midnight yesterday, there wasn’t enough power being generated in San Diego County to ensure the electric system was stable.

• SDG&E, at the request of the statewide grid operator, cut power to 291,000 accounts, one-fifth of its customers, for 45 minutes until enough new power came on line.

• The power company says it’s seeking answers from the grid operator to make sure this doesn’t happen again.
