TEL AVIV -- Shai Agassi has a simple way to describe Better Place, his modest effort to wean the world off the internal-combustion engine.

"We make electric cars more convenient and more affordable than gasoline cars," he says of his California company, which is developing a global network of electric cars and charging spots and stations based on a subscription model.

Agassi envisions a transport world free of dependence on oil and free of pollution -- as he fights off skepticism like the question of whether his idea will reduce pollution or simply redirect it.
