This Electric Car Drives Itself

Destined for deployment in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi, the electric pod has a top speed of 40 km/h (25mph) and follows magnets buried in pavement.

Masdar City, Abu Dhabi -- Some electric cars are meant to win races.

Others are made to carry groceries.

The Masdar Initiative, the wide-ranging alternative energy project funded by the government of Abu Dhabi, is testing out autonomous electric vehicles as part of the research park/residential complex development called Masdar City to see if communities and people will adapt to a relatively new form of public transportation.

The range limitations of most early electric cars will matter less in tightly packed urban areas, where the daily driving distance is likely to be much shorter than in the suburbs or rural areas.
