GM Considering Second Battery Supplier for Volt

SB LiMotive is a joint venture between Samsung SDI and Germany's Robert Bosch.

GM is reportedly considering using batteries manufactured by SB LiMotive for its Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid electric car. SB LiMotive is a joint venture between Samsung SDI and Germany's Robert Bosch.

If chosen, SB LiMotive would be the second Korean automotive battery maker to supply products to GM after LG Chem, which signed a deal to supply batteries for the Volt.

"We have been conducting joint research into automotive batteries with SB LiMotive and there is a strong possibility that the company will be chosen," a GM source said. "However, that does not mean we will change our supply orders from LG Chem."
