Nissan's Sunderland (UK) plant has taken the first step towards its electric revolution.

The company has applied to Sunderland City council for planning permission for a new battery plant which will create up to 350 new jobs and bosses hope will help safeguard thousands more at the factory and in its supply chain.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Business Secretary Lord Mandelson visited Wearside last July to announce the creation of a plant producing advanced lithium-ion batteries.
