South Africa is gearing up to produce batteries for electric vehicles.

These batteries could be viewed as the twenty-first century’s ‘new oil’, with any country able to produce them securing a significant portion of their energy future.

It means lessening dependence on the whims of the crude oil price and the politics of the countries holding these resources, as electric vehicles use no fuel.

Electric car companies are finding a friendly reception as they push West Coast states and cities for incentives and infrastructure investments.

Cape Town-based Optimal Energy developed the six-place, all-electric Joule.

2010 has been set as the target date for many electric vehicles to enter large-scale production worldwide.
