SYNOPSIS: German e-bike an hit 45km/h from 1,300 watt electric drive system.
Meet Grace. No, not the girl, the bike. E-bike actually. Developed in Germany, the "first street legal e-motorbike' can hit speeds of 45 km/h (28 mph) using the first-of-its-kind 1,300 watt, 48V hub motor mounted on the rear wheel. That's equivalent to 2 hp. Sixty lithium cells are stacked inside the large diameter aircraft aluminum frame tubing and provide 11.7Ah of energy storage, presumably with some form of access for service or maintenance. Range is said to be 40 km (24 miles).
Available in some 67 vibrant, powder-coated colors and three different models, the bike weighs a hefty 31kg (68 lbs.) . The frame is manufactured by famed mountain bike designer Karl Heinz Nicolai at his facility in Lübbrechtshausen, south of Hanover. Grace's marketing efforts are directed out of Biesenthal, near Berlin. The price of the e-bike matches its weight, a hefty €5,877 (approx £5,200/US$8,750), but as you can tell from the video below, you'll get viel Aufregung.
