The Electrification of Motoring

Source: Press and Dakotan
Class: SYNDICATED NEWS

SYNOPSIS: Review of electric car trends and technologies for general audience.

The owner of the Renault-Nissan alliance thinks that 10 percent of the new cars bought in 2020 will be pure-battery vehicles. IDTechEx, a research consultancy, predicts that one-third of the cars bought in 2025 will be electrically powered one way or another.

Three main reasons are apparent. First is the need to greatly reduce the amount of carbon dioxide entering our atmosphere before it is too late to save our life sustaining atmosphere. Second is the need for a less expensive fuel for our vehicles. Third is the need to find replacement energy sources for our dwindling oil supplies. (We can argue between us which we think is first, second or third later.) That means we need to develop the energy from other than hydro-carbon sources (oil and natural gas).

Hopefully, this timeline is conservative: With no- nonsense promotion, the 10% 'first step' cud be ac hieved in a few years via honest education and pro motion and the 'one-third' target met in TWO fleet 'cycles', that is two turnovers of ICE [fueled] un its, both cars and light trucks...Think of many of our consumer rental fleets [U-haul, Penske, etc.] had mostly electric trucks for 'local' missions-- rentals for local and less than 20-25 mile usage. What effect wud eliminating the fuel cost when the renter returns a truck or van? Same for car rental customers--while the rental company adds a little for the modest electric energy, the big bucks to refill the tank are eliminated...After renting and driving a BEV, what will this person think about an electric vehicle of his/her own, or available in a 'user-car' rental scheme? With 33% of the US fleet electric, 33% of the remainder economic hybr ids, and the remaining 33% burning Natural Gas, propane, straight ethanol, or 100% biodiesel fuel plus HHO-gas, we shud be in good shape as quickly as these goals can be met. Value leader versions of these autos are needed to keep the cost to con sumers and fleet operators down--let the rich buy their models via 'hard-orders' to the factory. The seniors, single-parents, students, GIs near their bases, short-haul commuters, and drive-to-local worksites/run errands folks will be grateful when they 'go-green' partially or fully...Aaron Allen..
