Metallic-Air Battery Could Have 11 Times Energy of Lithium

Source: Technology Review
Class: SYNDICATED NEWS

SYNOPSIS: Arizona State spin-off is targeting energy densities of at least 900 watt-hours per kilogram and up to 1,600 watt-hours per kilogram in the DOE-funded project.

A spinoff from Arizona State University says it can develop a metal-air battery that dramatically outperforms the best lithium-ion batteries on the market, and now it has the funding it needs to prove it.

The U.S. Department of Energy last week awarded a $5.13-million research grant to Scottsdale, AZ-based Fluidic Energy toward development of a metal-air battery that relies on ionic liquids, instead of an aqueous solution, as its electrolyte.

The terminated company "Metallic Power" (Jeffrey Colborn) has made nearly the same invention in 2002. It was bougt then by Marconi Corporation in 2003 and then sold by return to venture capital player Nth Power and his daughter Emerson Electric. That finaly burried the idea of zinc-air rechargable duel cell: "Emerson viewed the alternative energy work done at Metallic Power as non-traditional, which created unforeseen hurdles in the partnership. "

The Jeff Colborn's patent now sleeps in the safe deposit of Nth power.
