Toyota To Launch Battery Electric Car in 2012

Source: Green Fuels Forecast
Class: SYNDICATED NEWS

SYNOPSIS: Toyota focused on small urban city cars due to cost of lithium batteries.

Speaking at a media luncheon in Detroit today, Bob Carter, group vice president and general manager of Toyota confirmed that the automaker would launch a production electric vehicle in 2012. Toyota has shown two different BEV concepts in the past year, both of which were small urban commuter cars.

The FT-EV that was shown at the last North American international auto show in Detroit was based on the overseas market iQ mini-car while the FT-EV II from the recent Tokyo show is even smaller. Carter told the attendees that the first new BEV will not look like either of these concepts. He declined to comment on what type of vehicle would be introduced, but it will likely be a similar type of vehicle.

Mr. Carter makes a very important point about manufacturers needing to make realistic performance claims for their electric vehicles. Nothing is going to kill the EV's popularity faster than owners becoming stranded due to 'hope over reality' range expectations or early and expensive battery pack replacements due to misuse and neglect. Consider the reality that a lot of folks give as much consideration for the proper operation and care of their autos as for the proper care and operation of the vent fans in their bathrooms. EVs are going to have to deliver their claimed performances while being neglected and abused, sort of like real cars. No pun intended.
