Honda Aims for Under-$20K Insight Hybrid

At current exchange rate car will sell for $21,140US (1.89 million Yen) when it goes on sale February 6th.

TOKYO - Honda Motor Co wants to price its new Insight hybrid car below $20,000 in the U.S. market, a top executive said on Thursday.

Japan's No.2 automaker gave the new gasoline-electric car a starting price of 1.89 million yen ($21,140) on Thursday in Japan, where the car goes on sale on Feb. 6. It had said in the past the selling price in overseas markets would depend on exchange rates.

"We want to sell it for below $20,000," Executive Vice President Koichi Kondo told a news conference to launch the Insight.

Details of the plans have not been revealed yet, but the motorcycle is expected to go on sale in 2010.

Honda sold 2,096 Insight hybrids in April 2009.

Honda April '09 sales dropped 25%, which is still better than competitor Toyota that dropped 42% over same period.

Honda began business in American in 1959 with its popular moped.

Honda's American history began with Honda 50 motorbike and continues through the launch of the Honda Insight hybrid sedan.
