Toyota Motor Corp.'s new Prius will test whether drivers' current economic concern outweighs the memory of $4 gasoline.

Toyota will display a redesigned version of the world's best-selling hybrid car at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this week. The unveiling comes six months after gasoline surged to a record.

"The price shock dramatically shifted Americans' mindset, convincing them to opt for more fuel-efficient cars," Makoto Kikuchi, chief executive officer at Myojo Asset Management Japan Co. in Tokyo, which manages about $800 million. "That made the Prius the center of attention."
