Hybrid EVs Viewed From Down-Under

Correspondent finds both the Insight and Prius 'a hoot to drive' and certainly the wave of the future.

The future of motoring is a hoot, says US correspondent John Lamm after steering the world's most fuel-efficient cars - the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight petrol-electric hybrid vehicles - around California. Both are due in Australia next year.

It was hard to keep my eyes on the road instead of the little LCD readout panel on the dashboard. No, it wasn't a satellite navigation system or an in-car TV set, but a display of my fuel economy. It fascinated me - and why not?

According to the Toyota Prius's computer, I'd driven for the previous 15 minutes at 100 US miles a gallon, or 2.35 litres/100 km. I was going downhill, but it was a snaking canyon road with tunnels, hairpins and traffic.
