WASHINGTON, March 15 (Reuters) - The head of the Chrysler arm of DaimlerChrysler AG (NYSE:DCX - news) said on Friday that the U.S. Senate's decision this week to not tighten fuel economy standards meant greater responsibility for the auto industry to work on improving vehicle efficiency.

"To me, a viable domestic automotive industry and environmentally friendly actions are not mutually exclusive," Zetsche said at a luncheon speech.

But he said the best approach would be for manufacturers and the U.S. government to work together.
