UTC To Develop Fuel Cells for Nissan
SOUTH WINDSOR, Conn. Feb 19 (Reuters) - UTC Fuel Cells, a unit of United Technologies Corp. , said on Tuesday that it has signed agreements with Japanese automaker Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. (7201.T) to develop fuel cells and fuel cell components for vehicles.
French automaker Renault SA (RENA.PA), Nissan's alliance partner, is also participating in the development projects.
UTC Fuel Cells will provide fuel cell power plants to Nissan for evaluation. In addition, UTC Fuel Cells, Nissan and Renault will work to develop components for fuel cell vehicles.
UTC Fuel Cells has been developing fuel cells for transportation applications since 1996. Automakers have been working on perfecting fuel cells -- which convert hydrogen into electricity and water -- as a replacement for polluting internal combustion engines.
