Hybrid Cars Not That Popular in Australia

As hybrid sales flounder, diesel private sales are up 62.9 per cent from 10,566 to 17,215.

WHILE petrol-electric hybrid cars have become the must-have item for greenies in the past year, sales are still very slow in Australia.

Only 4228 hybrid cars were sold last year, representing just 0.7 per cent of the total passenger car market of 637,019.

And 2725, or 64.5 per cent, of those were bought by governments and businesses.

A UK government challenge to produce a medium/small vehicle with CO2 emissions of less than 100 g/km has seen engineering company Ricardo team up with PSA Peugeot Citroen and UK research group QinetiQ to develop an innovative diesel full-hybrid.
