While Japanese carmakers have been at the forefront of hybrid car technology, attention in the industry is beginning to shift to how to reduce the weight of car bodies to further improve fuel efficiency.

Toyota Motor Corp., the world's second largest carmaker in terms of sales, has managed to significantly reduce the weight of one of its cars by using carbon fiber reinforced plastic in a prototype named the 1/X.

"We chose CFRP because its seems to be the most feasible technology at this stage," said Nobuya Kawamura, group manager of Toyota's Organic Material Department.
