Car-Sharing Hits First Speed Bump in Australia

Stonnington Council rejected the car-share scheme because it did not want to give away parking spots to a private company.

AN INNER-CITY council that proudly spruiks its sustainability credentials has become the first in Melbourne to say no to a booming car-sharing program designed to reduce the number of vehicles on the road.

Stonnington Council has rejected an application from car- share company Flexicar for free car-parking spaces outside Prahran, South Yarra and Windsor railway stations.

The council rejected the car-share scheme because it did not want to give away parking spots to a private company.
