MANATEE COUNTY -- In a school district where buses rack up nearly 4 million miles a year, the idea of boosting fuel economy while cutting air pollution has obvious appeal.

So Manatee school officials jumped when given the chance to be among the first districts in the country to add a pair of hybrid diesel-electric school buses to their fleet last February.

Thousands of miles later, the hybrids are proving to be worthy additions on the road, and in regards to environmental sensitivity, but not at the bank.
