WASHINGTON, Feb 5 (Reuters) - Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle said on Tuesday he has the votes necessary to block Republicans from adding language to a broad energy policy that would allow oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

The fate of the pristine refuge on Alaska's north coast has been a long-simmering battle between Democrats and Republicans in writing a policy to promote more domestic energy supplies, renewable energy sources and conservation measures.

Under Senate rules, Republicans would need to convince 60 of the chamber's 100 members to vote for opening the refuge and at the same time block a threatened filibuster of the legislation by Democrats opposed to drilling in the wilderness area.
