STERLING, Colo. -- Connie and Royce Chambers have a nightly routine: They plug in their cell phones to recharge them, and they plug in their car -- to recharge it.

The Sterling couple recently purchased a 2002 all-electric car known as a GEM vehicle made by Global Electric Motorcars, a Daimler Chrysler company. The electric car was introduced nearly 10 years ago.

"We mostly use the car to go to work," said Connie, an employee at the Sterling Public Library. Royce works for the railroad.
