Samsung Heavy Industries is making a play for a bigger share of the LNG market by announcing the readiness of a new fuel-efficient design.

The yard is promising owners cost savings of 30%, or more than $1m per year, and 7% more carrying capacity. The new vessel type uses gas to generate electricity, which then powers the engines. Existing ships use steam turbine technology.

The electricity-powered LNG carrier will go on sale from this month at similar prices to ships already on the market.
