Fill 'er Up With Hydrogen
Imagine if, in the early 1900s, the government had entered into a partnership with the buggy industry to develop a horse that would go farther on a gallon of oats - just before the horse and buggy became obsolete.
So it might be with the government's efforts to develop a car that will get 80 miles per gallon of gasoline. The achievement will be irrelevant when cars no longer run on gasoline.
Three cheers for U.S. Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham for recognizing the future reality. Abraham on Tuesday announced that government-industry research will be redirected. Instead of high-mileage gasoline vehicles, it will focus on developing hydrogen as the fuel of the future.
