Florida Wind Power Shows Promise

Off-shore wind installations show most promise, but cost is the biggest issue.

Dec. 28--Here are two facts on wind that don't seem to fit together:

1. Despite the belief of many South Floridians that we are constantly swept by strong and steady breezes from the east and southeast, energy experts think we have crummy winds for energy purposes. "An iffy proposition at best," says Miami weather forecaster Wayne Colin.

2. The biggest producer of wind energy in the country is FPL Group, headquartered in Juno Beach, Fla., and the parent of local utility Florida Power & Light. "No one is close to them in the United States," says Tom Gray of the American Wind Energy Association.
