In 2006, The Lightning Car Company set out to develop electric technology for a luxury British sports car with a view to creating a super car with outstanding presence, power & performance.
Powered by NanoSafe™, the electric Lightning GT, features an impressive 700 bhp powerful acceleration and a top speed capability of more than 130mph. In short, the electric Lightning will be a difficult proposition to beat.
By combining classic, British sports car design with racing car technology and state of the art battery power & electric motor innovation, the Lightning has been designed and developed in the UK with exhilarating performance front of mind.
Whilst its head-turning looks will appeal to the most discerning of drivers, unlike other sports cars the Lightning is also easy on the conscience. With virtually no polluting emissions, this energy-efficient car will use clean technology for the ultimate green rating. Following production of several Lightning petrol prototypes, the electric Lightning GT, Sports and Extended Range versions are now available to pre-order.
- Ultra smooth 100% electric
power (700+bhp) immediately from zero rpm
- 10 minute charge time for
over 250 miles of motoring (GTSE model)
- Uncompromising performance with
0-60mph in less than 4 seconds (GTS model)
- State of the art NanoSafe™
battery system and Hi-Pa Drive™ electric motor
technology

It's interesting to read that it develops 700 HP from zero RPM. I wonder how much torque is required to develop 700 HP at zero RPM.

This is terrific! Can we convert this power sysem into solar power? Not only to popwer our automobiles, but to power our homes and factories. If so when, and if not why not. let's save our planet and reduce our dependence on oil.

Does the editor who brought the story realize that he wrote the the following under Synopsis?
++++++++++++++
SYNOPSIS: Classic British sports car "NOT" available in electric drive powered by Altairnano NanoSafe lithium batteries.
++++++++++++++++
I think he mistyped and meant "NOW" and not "NOT"
He's confusing some people. Although it is obvious to anyone that clicks on the company's web site.

I haven't seen a price for this car but compared to the Tesla, I would think Tesla management would be shaking in their boots. Aren't rich folk going to want the best electric performance vehicle out there?:
Tesla = 248 HP
Lightning GT = 700+ HP
Tesla = Charge batteries in 3.5 hours
Lightning GT = Charge battery pack in < 10 min
Tesla = 200+ mile range (if they don't revise lower again)
Lightning GT = 250+ mile range
The car looks very cool on Lightning's web site.
I like the Tesla, but it looks like the Lightning GT is going to give Tesla a run for its money!

Their website is poor from my perspective... it seems to only work in Internet Explorer (doesn't in Firefox or Opera), and even in IE it seems like all flash so I can't use a larger font to actually read.
Without knowing price, Tesla may not be shaking at all... this one could be at least two fold or more more expensive, they may have no plans to sell it into the US market (they'd have to pass US safety regulations, have a way to market and distribute, and may be able to sell every car they make in the UK, or at least Europe). The Tesla will probably be available sooner (later this year), and Tesla already has their 1st production run pre-sold (cash up front, not reservations).
It certainly sounds sweet though, even if we never see this car in the US, the battery/charging technology hopefully will help advance Tesla and the others.

It seems that the one and arguably only drawback for the Tesla Roadster is the charging time. Perhaps this Lightning car can help spark that last development either through straight up competition or by combining forces. Perhaps they should consider the latter, since it appears that Lightning will only be selling this car in the UK and Tesla in the USA thus not really competing with each other anyway....or so it seems at this juncture.

Did anyone catch the first paragraph in the Q&A where it says "charging times can vary depending on the state of the batteries and also the power source chosen" ?
If you want it to charge lickety-split, you need more than a 110volt 15amp connection. I suspect even a 220volt 30amp dryer plug won't charge it in less than 3 hours. The problem is not how much current the batteries will accept, it's how much is available at the socket.
With an unlimited budget many things are possible. That doesn't make them cost effective.

Its a great car but I think its 55k pounds (not dollars, pounds!) which would make it over $100K. I think electric car makers need to be working on models in the more practical price range if they want the masses to convert to their products. It seem ironic that all these choices coming out seem to be geared towards the wealthy and celebrities.
