FirstGroup Pledges to Cut Bus and Rail Emissions

Scotland's FirstGroup is a 3.7 Billion GBP revenue transportation company operating bus fleets and train service in UK and North America.

FirstGroup yesterday unveiled the transport industry's first "comprehensive climate change strategy", setting targets for reducing its carbon footprint both externally in its services and internally within the company.

Moir Lockhead, chief executive, said: "It's a sign of the times, the political momentum is moving in making sure that we at least are aware of the impact of carbon emissions."

FirstGroup aims to reduce emissions in stages, setting a 25% reduction target by 2020 for bus and 20% for rail.


The last Paris tram ground to a halt 60 years ago. Now a new tram line is being introduced with lots of fanfare. France hopes this return to the past will ring in a new era of urban mobility. The tram is quiet, fast and comfortable -- a perfect remedy for traffic jams.

The proposed Transbay Transit Center with its possible 1,200-foot tower, elevated public park the length of five football fields and room for high-speed trains someday linking California's major cities.
