PEORIA - Illinois farmland famous for producing corn and soybeans may someday sprout high-tech windmills designed to produce electricity.

Proponents of wind-produced energy say it's a way to develop an environmentally friendly and relatively cheap power source while giving a needed economic boost to farmers who lease out land for windmill sites.

"I think there is great potential in Illinois to build a wind power industry," said Stefan Noe, president of Illinois Wind Energy, which is developing a pilot project in rural Bureau County.
