Green is the colour of choice at the moment as insurers hop aboard the ethical bandwagon to entice eco-friendly motorists. However, an analysis of so-called ‘green’ motor insurance by price comparison website moneysupermarket.com, reveals drivers face fast-changing premiums as insurers blow hot and cold on eco-friendly motor cover.

Several insurers including CIS and MORE TH>N have launched green motor insurance, claiming to offer good value while alleviating driver guilt by offsetting your carbon emissions or offering discounts for eco-friendly cars. However, moneysupermarket.com found premiums on this type of policy have been highly volatile in recent weeks.

Richard Mason, director of insurance at price comparison website moneysupermarket.com, said:“Insurers should be applauded for rewarding responsible motoring, but our research shows that at present this type of policy is experiencing huge premium swings, so what might look like a bargain one week could double or even treble in price just days later. We support those drivers who want to make a difference to the environment, but for the time being we would urge them not to assume that green car insurance is the best place to start.”
