KC Light Rail Gains 'Heavy Hitters' Support

In a switch, Kansas City VIPs back Chastain's concept, if not the voter-approved details.

Influential business and civic leaders are lining up behind Kansas City’s light rail initiative in what is being described as a "sea change" in attitude inspired by voters.

"The people have spoken, and we shouldn’t take that lightly," said Mark Ernst, chairman of the Civic Council of Greater Kansas City.

"We are looking to be supportive of whatever process emerges and waiting for the city to resolve how it will proceed."


The last Paris tram ground to a halt 60 years ago. Now a new tram line is being introduced with lots of fanfare. France hopes this return to the past will ring in a new era of urban mobility. The tram is quiet, fast and comfortable -- a perfect remedy for traffic jams.

The proposed Transbay Transit Center with its possible 1,200-foot tower, elevated public park the length of five football fields and room for high-speed trains someday linking California's major cities.
