Vermont Adopts California ZEV Mandate
MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - State government is getting ready to require the sale of high-efficiency, low-polluting cars.
Natural Resources Secretary Scott Johnstone said Tuesday he would adopt regulations requiring that 10 percent of new cars sold in Vermont emit very little pollution or none at all. That mandate would translate into annual sales of as many as 900 of the advanced technology vehicles in Vermont starting in 2003.
"One of the prime goals is to push the technology," Johnstone said. "This industry has been mostly interested in selling gasoline-powered automobiles. We're saying, 'Let's move that dial."'
