Dana Extracts Hydrogen From Methane Using Microwaves

SYNOPSIS: The propriety process, made possible with Dana's AtmoPlas microwave atmospheric plasma technology is unique because the hydrogen recovery rate could potentially exceed 95 percent.

TOLEDO, Ohio,--Dana Corporation announced that it has successfully tested a new application to recover hydrogen from methane gas at an extremely high rate. The propriety process, made possible with Dana's AtmoPlas microwave atmospheric plasma technology is unique because the hydrogen recovery rate could potentially exceed 95 percent. These results make Dana's AtmoPlas technology suitable for fuel-cell applications that may require on-demand production capability.

Potentially, this process could eliminate some of the hydrogen storage issues in mobile fuel-cell applications. The overall energy efficiency of the process is currently being optimized.

Through its global network of fuel-cell technology centers, Dana has become a world leader in the development of high-volume production methods for fuel-cell stack, balance-of-plant, and fuel-processor components for portable, small stationary, and automotive applications. Dana is actively working with most major OEMs to develop high-quality, cost-effective fuel-cell components.

   Magnetrons are about 65% efficient. Plasmas lose heat quickly through radiation (big issue in fusion reactor design). It's hard to see how this process could efficiently generate hydrogen based on these upfront issues. I hope I'm missing something here...

   My problem with it is that it spends electrical energy to convert methane into H2 which has less than half the energy density per unit volume. And what happens to the carbon?

   With reference to the efficiency of microwave generator units. High Power Generator units are common place in industrial processing. 100 kW and our latest 120 kW units are 90-95% efficient at converting the electrical energy input into the product. This makes the magnetron efficiency better than 95 %. Low power units such as domestic microwave oven power supplies are as low as 45-50%. Bob McKinnon Industrial Microwave Systems Ltd
