The Government said today it would consider incentives and penalties on cars according to their efficiency.

The Green Party has proposed linking car registration charges with fuel efficiency as occurs in Europe.

The move comes as petrol jumped 6c to $1.48 for a litre of regular today and as Ford announced it will slash 30,000 jobs by 2012 in North America in response to smaller foreign cars outselling traditional American gas guzzlers.
