Husky Takes First Steps in 'Oilsands'

$500-million project likely to face labour shortages: Due at year-end 2006

CALGARY - Husky Energy Inc. will spend half a billion dollars to build its first oilsands project in northeastern Alberta, the oil and gas producer said yesterday.

The completion of Tucker Oil Sands Project is slated for the end of 2006, despite concerns that labour shortages in Fort McMurray -- the remote town that staffs the province's oilsands projects -- will begin to hamper the industry in that year.

Don Campbell, spokesman for Husky, said the company watches labour demand fuelled by other projects in the region very closely, but is confident his firm can keep within its budget.
