IT'S PERSONAL: How the Dutch Commute

Many of us are aware that the folks in the Netherlands see the bicycle as more than just a recreational toy, as we do here in North America. As many as 40 percent of all trips in Amsterdam and other Dutch cities are by bicycle as people commute to work, school, shop and visit friends and relatives, all on two and sometimes three wheels.

But until you’ve seen the supporting infrastructure the Dutch have built for their citizens --that, in fact, gives priority to cyclists over motor vehicles -- you won’t truly appreciate the thought, effort, and investment they’ve forged to make it more desirable and practical for people, young, old and in between, to climb on a bicycle instead of into a car.
