IT'S PERSONAL: 21st Century Tech Jobs?

This morning I had the opportunity to sit in on a meeting at our local community college. I’d been invited to give my input on a grant they had received. The purpose of the grant is to prepare a work force for the transportation technology jobs of the 21st century. Present at the meeting was an executive from a large dealership chain that sells both Chevrolet Volts and Nissan LEAFs, obviously not at the same dealership. When asked if there is a need for technicians to work on Volts and LEAFs, he replied that given the current low volume of the cars in the area, his dealership really only needed the one they had. Setting up a program to train future technicians would probably be premature, since, he explained, the car companies already do a pretty good job of training Volt and LEAF techs.

So, what are the transportation tech jobs of the 21st century? Certainly engineers, but that’s not the responsibility of a community college, which is more vocationally focused. In the above photo I am leaning on one possible job, maintaining electric motorcycles and similar classes of vehicles, but what else will we be needing? I’d love to hear your thoughts at editor@evworld.com.
