SPACE X's SWEET SUCCESS

Starting this month, Tesla will begin early delivery of its next electric car, the Model S, which represents the cutting edge of both style and EV technology. As if heralding that event, and hopefully foreshadowing its own successful launch, the man behind the company can sit back and savor another, perhaps even more spectacular technological feat: the successful launch and rendezvous of the Dragon space capsule with the International Space Station, followed by its safe re-entry and retrieval late last week 450 miles off the California coast with 1,450 pounds of science experiments and other cargo.

Elon Musk is not only the CEO of Tesla Motors, but also the founder and CEO of Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, or SpaceX, developers of the Falcon 9 launch vehicle and the Dragon space capsule. The flight last week is the first of twelve planned for it over the next three years, involving a $1.6 billion contract with NASA to ferry supplies to and return experiments from the ISS, orbiting some 250 miles above the earth. Musk’s long term goal is a mission to Mars: Dragon may be the first milestone in that grand adventure.
