FORD JOINS AUTO STOP/START RACE

71 MPG. That’s the fuel economy rating of a new, plug-in hybrid, right? Nope. That’s what Ford Europe is claiming their new Fiesta ECOnetic subcompact sedan is capable of delivering. Actually in EU terms its 3.3 liters of fuel burned for every 100 km (62 miles). And the Fiesta isn’t a hybrid, well, not much of one, though because it has Auto Stop/Start technology integrated into its 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel engine propulsion system, we could technically describe it as a mild hybrid, especially since it also incorporates Smart Regenerative Charging, Eco Mode and shift indicator light, all designed help maximize fuel economy. Ford Europe will begin producing it in Germany for the European market later this year with pricing starting at the US equivalent of $22,800 (£14445/€17,526).

While US buyers may not see the Fiesta ECOnetic on their side of the Atlantic, Ford is offering the Auto Stop/Start option on the new 2013 Focus for just $295, which is a bargain. It will be offered only on the 1.6L gasoline engine. The company estimates that over a 5 year period, the system will save the owner over $1,100 in fuel costs.
