It's not obvious who's behind WalkScore, but the website says it's "inspired by" the Sightline Institute in Seattle (where I first heard about it). Other groups mentioned are Cooltown Studios, a Washington DC outfit with the slogan "Crowdsourcing urban growth for creatives" and Walkable Communities Inc. . Thanks to all behind it!
Editor's Note: My community, Papillion, NE, which CNN and Money ranked the 6th Best Place to live in America in 2007, scored between 63-75 depending on one's street address.

I think everyone should run the address of the place they're considering moving to through that web site.
The site seems to be reasonably accurate.
The only thing it doesn't take into account is the proximity to your place of work.
I live in a place that scored 52/100... worse than my previous location that I lived in last year which scored 62/100. However, I now live closer to work and regularly ride my bike to work in the spring/summer/autumn.

I'm curious how this is calculated. Everything listed by me (grocery, drug store, library, school, theater, etc) is under a mile from my home (most well under a half mile), yet my score is 60. What do they consider walkable?

The system also has a few bugs, perhaps due to overzealous business self-classifications. A local company that embroiders uniforms was included in listings of Bars and of Restaurants!

from above 'With an elegantly simple presentation, you simply type in a US address (sorry, rest of the world)'
Ya, so it works for Canada too. I hope your not implying Canada is just part of the states :)
Score of 52, which seems apt because I walk to most places. However it is highly inaccurate for some things. Mistaking things like an ACTRA HQ as a cinema. And Surprisingly most things within the local mall that is less than a kilometer away did not show up, nor did university facilities, even the open to public ones.
So the mistakes and ommisions even out I think. It will get better for Canada as time goes by i suspect
